Leads the technical side. The Filmatic app was his idea, and he created the algorithm and the framework the app runs on.

Gold marks the stronger option in each row.IMDb Watchlist wins 2 of 7. That is the honest count, not a rhetorical device.
Stay with IMDb if…
- You need authoritative credits, release dates or production detail.
- The size of the ratings dataset is what you trust.
- You want one place covering movies, TV, shorts, video games and crew records.
- You work in the industry and use IMDbPro.
Use something else if…
- Your watchlist has become a graveyard you never open.
- You want recommendations aimed at you rather than at everyone.
- You want the answer to be about the movie rather than about one service.
- You want to decide in thirty seconds, not research a movie.
IMDb is a product of its respective owner, which has not sponsored, endorsed or reviewed this comparison, and which does not own, run or endorse the Filmatic app. We checked the details against their own site on the review date above. Products change, so verify anything that matters to you.

IMDb has been the definitive movie database since before most of its competitors existed, and on data it remains unmatched. Credits, production companies, alternate titles, release histories, obscure trivia. Nothing comes close.
The watchlist is a different story. It exists, it works, and it is not what anyone would design today if the goal were helping someone choose a movie.
The problem is category, not quality
IMDb is a reference work, and reference works optimise for lookup. You arrive knowing what you want and leave with a fact. That is a genuinely different design problem from “help me decide”, and the watchlist is a feature bolted onto an encyclopaedia rather than a considered product.
The symptoms are familiar. Sorting and filtering barely exist, so a watchlist of three hundred movies becomes unnavigable. “More like this” leans on popularity and shared metadata. And Amazon owns it, so Prime Video runs through the whole interface, which makes a share of what you see commercial rather than editorial.
What IMDb does better than everything else
Data depth. If you need to know who did the second-unit photography, IMDb knows.
The ratings dataset. Hundreds of thousands of votes per major movie. As a broad quality signal that is genuinely valuable, even though it says nothing about personal fit.
Breadth of media. Movies, television, shorts, video games, and full crew records. Letterboxd does movies. Trakt does movies and TV. IMDb does everything.
Permanence. It has been there for thirty years and will be there in thirty more.
What to use instead, by job

For logging and movie culture: Letterboxd. Better interface, vastly better community, proper statistics, and it imports your IMDb ratings. See Letterboxd alternatives if you want the wider field.
For automatic tracking: Trakt. Scrobbles from Plex, Jellyfin and Emby so you never log manually again. See Filmatic vs Trakt.
For where to watch it: JustWatch or Reelgood. Both are considerably better at availability than IMDb.
For deciding: Filmatic. Swipe through movies, marking each one liked, seen, save or skip, and each swipe sharpens a taste model. Open it, get a short ranked list with availability for your country. No
Where Filmatic is worse
- Data depth. Not remotely comparable. We have basic metadata. IMDb has everything.
- No games or crew records.
- No large public ratings dataset. Your model is yours, which means no crowd average to fall back on.
- Cold start. IMDb’s search works instantly. A taste model needs swipes first.
Leaving is easy, which is worth knowing
To IMDb’s credit, it does not lock you in. You can export your ratings and lists as CSV from your account pages, and Letterboxd, Trakt and Simkl all accept that format. If you have a decade of ratings sitting there, they can move.
The realistic outcome is not that you delete IMDb. It is that you stop trying to make an encyclopaedia do a recommender’s job, and keep it open in the other tab for when you need to settle an argument about who directed something.
Questions
What is the best free IMDb alternative for tracking?
Letterboxd for movies and movie culture, Trakt if you want tracking to happen automatically, Simkl if you watch a lot of TV and anime. All three accept an IMDb import, so moving your ratings across is a one-off job rather than a retyping exercise, and none of them asks you to pay before you can log what you have watched.
Can I export my IMDb watchlist and ratings?
Yes. IMDb offers CSV export of your ratings and lists from your account's data pages. Letterboxd and Trakt both accept imports in that shape, which makes IMDb one of the easier services to leave.
Why are IMDb's recommendations so weak?
Discovery has never been the product. IMDb is a reference work, and its "More like this" leans on popularity and shared metadata rather than on any model of you. It is also commercially adjacent to Prime Video, which does not help.
Is IMDb's rating any good?
It is a useful sanity check and a poor predictor of whether you specifically will enjoy something. A 7.4 average across two hundred thousand voters tells you a movie is broadly competent. It tells you nothing about fit.
What is the best IMDb alternative for tracking?
Letterboxd for movies and movie culture, Trakt if you want automatic tracking, Simkl if you watch a lot of TV and anime. All three accept an IMDb import, which makes moving your ratings across a one-off job rather than a retyping exercise.
Should I keep IMDb at all?
Probably, as a reference. Nothing else has its depth of credits and production data. Just do not expect it to help you choose.
